- Globally unique ecosystem
- Function as the Lungs of the Lower Mainland
- Plays a role in regional climate and hydrology
- Vital stopover for migratory birds, at least 103 migratory bird species identified in Burns Bog
- Home to rare and endangered species like the Southern Red-backed vole
- “Stores 10 times more carbon than other ecosystems” (UNEP Dec 11, 07)
- “Meter for meter, peatlands store more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem” (Dise, Nov 09)
- Peat bogs store and filter 10% of the world’s fresh water
- At 3,000 ha, Burns Bog is one of the largest undeveloped urban wilderness in Norther America
- Harbours rare plants and animals
- provides critical habitat for the regional Greater Sandhill Cranes

Threats Facing Burns Bog
- Lack of knowledge about the need to save our disappearing peatlands
- Development, the Bog is a huge landmass in the heart of Vancouver’s Lower Mainland and has a history of development proposals including the PNE (theme park), inland port, cranberry farms, race track and now South Fraser Perimeter Road among other things
- The Conservation Covenant protecting the Bog is supposed to be legally binding. However, it is being ignored by all levels of government at this time with the development of the South Fraser Perimeter Road
