LOCAL WOMEN NOMINATED FOR THE BURNS BOG CONSERVATION SOCIETY'S CELEBRATING WOMEN & THE SPIRIT OF THE CRANES AWARDS

FEBRUARY 21, 2006

Delta, BC, Wednesday, February 21, 2006: The Burns Bog Conservation Society has recieved dozens of nominations of outstanding women for the 5th Annual Celebrating Women & the Spirit of the Cranes awards, to recognize the contributions of local women to our communities. The fundraising event will take place on Saturday, March 11, beginning at 6pm, at the Kennedy Seniors Centre, in Delta.

According to Society president, Eliza Olson, women deserve to be recognized for many reasons. "Canadian research has found that 75% of women 15 and over volunteer. Women also make up the majority of non-profit sector and economically speaking, are the fastest growing segment of entrepreneurs. Despite this, women still manage to take on a disproportionate amount of household, caregiving and voluntary work," says Olson.

Event Chair Debbie Wilkins explains, "Celebrating Women & the Spirit of the Cranes is timed to coincide with International Women's Day on March 8 and the return of the sandhill crane to nest in Burns Bog. In North American First Nations folklore, the crane symbolizes industriousness, loyalty and creativity-the same characteristics of the women who make a difference in our communities."

Tickets are $65 on or before February 25 and $75 afterwards. To purchase tickets, visit www.spiritofthecranes.org or call the office at 604-572-0373.
