14th Annual International Bog Day Celebrates the Diversity in and Around Burns Bog
July 15, 2005

Delta, BC—July 31 st 2005—The 14th Annual International Bog Day, a free event hosted by the Burns Bog Conservation Society, is striving to make a deep environmental awareness impact—with a twist. The Burns Bog Conservation Society has decided that this year’s International Bog Day will mirror one of Canada’s most important premises: multiculturalism.

“It’s an exciting event,” says Society president Eliza Olson. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the family to learn about environmental issues in a fun and interactive way.”

International Bog Day, is held in the Planet Ice lot, located at 10388 Nordel Court. The festivities begin at 10:30 am and continue until 3:00 pm. Each year, speakers and entertainers address environmental conservation issues. Now, add cultural displays and local ethnic performances and you get the 14 th Annual International Bog Day. Burns Bog, the largest raised peatland on the West Coast of the Americas, teems with diverse animal and plant species, similar to the Lower Mainland’s exciting and expanding multicultural society.

“Diversity is a beautiful thing,” notes Ida Mak, the Society’s Education Coordinator. “That’s why the Burns Bog Conservation Society has reached out to the different cultural communities in the Lower Mainland. Concerns such as global warming and pollution are issues everyone should be taking seriously.”

International Bog Day is the pinnacle of the Society’s efforts to reach and educate each and every Lower Mainland resident. The Burns Bog Conservation Society has also published bog information booklets in English, Chinese and Punjabi. This summer, tours through the Delta Nature Reserve, a portion of Burns Bog, are offered in English and French. Mandarin and Cantonese tours are a future possibility.
